Trilogy Health Services, a provider of senior living services in over 110 communities across the Midwest, has partnered with Cinematic Health Education (CHE) to provide a bridge to nursing careers for hundreds of Indiana Allied Health Professionals who stepped up to help protect seniors and chronically ill patients during the COVID-19 crisis. The new program provides remote instruction and in-person skills training for Temporary Nurse Aides (TNA) to continue their careers as Certified Nursing Assistants (CNA).
TNAs are a new category of Allied Health Professionals created by the federal government to address nursing shortages created by COVID-19. This bridge program has emerged through an innovative program by the State of Indiana to credit TNAs with clinical experience and accelerate the training required to prepare for the CNA certification exam. The American Health Care Association/National Center for Assisted Living reported that approximately 140,000 TNAs have completed training nationally, and, without CNA certification, all of them will become ineligible to work in a residential care setting once the pandemic is declared over by the federal government.

Schmiedeler noted that the remote learning structure of this new partnership will allow hundreds of Trilogy’s TNAs to access CHE’s high-quality instruction in a safe and efficient manner, and prepare them to pass the CNA certification exam. The centerpiece of CHE’s program is a Hollywood-quality feature film that teaches the knowledge and soft skills needed to navigate a variety of patient interactions in the residential care setting. CHE's customers have trained thousands of Allied Health Professionals in 23 states over the past two years.

Under Indiana’s program, TNAs with 200 hours of work experience can become eligible for CNA certification with 15 hours of classroom or digital instruction, three hours of skills training, and by passing the CNA certification exam. Many other states are currently developing formal processes to help TNAs transition to a CNA.
